ProspectMatch: Unemployed? Then Don’t Look for a Job

by admin ~ February 2nd, 2009. Filed under: unemployed.

If you’re out of work, it’s likely you’re looking for a job and it’s difficult.  It’s difficult because you are trying to sell something that people don’t need.  For example, if you have been a loan processor, you send our resume stressing your experience as a loan processor.  But if no one needs any loan processors, you find it difficult to get any call backs.  How long would a department store stay in business if they sold clothes that people did not want?  How long would the supermarket stay in business selling food that people did not want?  If selling what people don’t want seems foolish to you, then why do you keep doing it?  You are the product and you are currently a product that people don’t want.  The good news: you can change the product that you are and people will want to give you money for it.

Try this idea on for size.  Sell what people want and you will always have work and always have money.  You must break yourself of this mindset that you have a set of skills or experience and that’s what you have to sell.  That’s way too limiting and will keep you poor.  Instead, ask yourself–what do people want?  If you supply what people want, they you will always make money.

If you want to know what people want, there are several ways to find out:

1. Look in the newspaper and see what ads are always there.  You might say “I see a lot of jobs for accountants but I don’t like that type of work.”  That’s the exact attitude that keeps you poor.  You are more interested in what YOU want than what OTHER people want.  Wake up–life is about serving others and they will pay your handsomely to do so.  If you want to stay wedded to your self serving desires of what you want, then get happy to be poor.

2. Ask people.  Ask people you know what they want (tip–ask rich people because they have more money).  Write down what they say. They may say they want to lose weight and they have not lost weight because when they prepare meals, they prepare meals they like (e.g. fried chicken) rather than the low calorie foods that would be healthful (e.g. broiled chicken).  Ask how much would they pay to have three meals delivered to them daily that would help them lose weight because they would not need to prepare any meals.  Maybe there’s a weight-loss food prep business waiting for you.

Another example. Companies want to increase their sales.  Find a product you like and ask the company if you can sell their product, commission only.  They will hire you fast because anything you sell helps them and they are happy to pay you for your results.

Do you get the idea? There are TONS of ways to make money if you ask the right question: what do people want?

Like many people, you may be thinking, “I don’t know how to do accounting or sell things or make food.” So what?  In the age of the Internet, you can learn anything in a matter of days.   If you are not willing to learn on your own or study, then that’s the second reason you’re out of work and have no money.

This is the age of self learning.  Those that can teach themselves will ALWAYS be able to learn something new, something that people want, and provide it. if you happened to get your first job as a loan processor and think that’s all you can do, then good luck because you’ll need it.  But if you say to yourself that you can teach yourself new skills and get off your butt, determine what people want, learn how to deliver it and then deliver it, money will never be a problem.

Absolutely agree. Time for “jobs” is over. Learn, play, be curious, do things that make sense (to you). Maybe you have a bit less money for some time - but you will have the time and the “right feeling” to enjoy whatever you earn - and you will be out of the rat race, hanging around or working 80 hrs a week at will, not at someone else’s requirements…

  2. Shelley Cox

That’s one powerful tactic. Can I also suggest people find a copy of the “Acres of Diamonds”, an absolute classic from the early 1900s that talks about exactly what you describe above, they didn’t have the internet then though :) The author Russell Conway talks about “If you can’t make money where you are - then you won’t make it anywhere, and it’s all about what you talk about finding out what people want and then providing to them at a price.

Shelley Coxs last blog post..This site is only going to get bigger and better

This is a time for everybody to find a way to make their own path to money. Self-employment of some sort. Perhaps it is time to take the plunge or the risk and turn a hobby into a livable wage. Whatever it is, people need to find a way to redefine what they think of as a job.

  4. Investory

I think this is a key: “Do you get the idea? There are TONS of ways to make money if you ask the right question: what do people want?”
I am unemployed currently but think that it is a good chance for me to change the lifestyle and make a lot of money.

  5. Searching101

Agreed. At times like these it is best to keep all windows and doors open, since we do not know which ones will shut when. However it is important that we do not panic because this will severely impair the effectiveness of any work you might undertake!

  6. Dave Brown

I think you bring up some great points here. I also think that to really get yourself out of a rut you need to be creative. You have to come up with new ways at looking at things that people are looking for that you could provide for them.

Learning is definitely the number one way to make money. Learn and learn, and learn some more. I’m so happy that I try and constantly push myself into new arenas that I know nothing about to try and push my limits of what I know.

  7. Mary K

Very good ideas. A Positive Mindset will always win through. Visualize the perfect job. See yourself actually working in your perfect job. Start your own business. Be creative.

  8. Mark @ SEO Blog

I really liked” This is the age of self-learning” and i completely agree with that. No doubt if you have the ability to learn by yourself than you can learn every time a new thing and can move towards top. The Person with self learning ability can never be “Unemployed” :)

  9. MR CICADA

The secret is to create employed. Long story, more at my blog, if you ever stumble on it!

  10. Liza

Agreed. People often get stuck in this rut thinking they have to find a job like their previous job, a job in the same field they’re used to, a job in the field their degree is in. It’s as if many of them just don’t understand that there are SO many potential jobs out there and so many that haven’t even been thought up yet that it’s impossible not to find something ELSE that you can do!

  11. Barney

In some ways totally agree with this blog it think point 2 is a fantastic way to find a new business, but remember to ask more than one person before investing in a cooking course. The first point also will help find a job area with potential and demand. However my big problem with all of this is the total disregard for job satisfaction, it seems to have been totally over looked simply to get financial reward. From experience this works in the short term, but long term it crippling.

  12. Denver Photographer

I like the idea of asking rich people what they would pay money for. I think that would be a great way of coming up with some interesting business ideas.

  13. Job Classifieds

Started my own business and loving it! Not happy with odds of succeeding though.

  14. Mike

I have found out that asking people really does do the trick. Many think that others won’t know anything, but I have quickly discovered just how much it is that they do know!

  15. Ryan

    Thanks!
I would put something about clickbank ebooks in this.

  16. doradztwo marketingowe

You can find company with products and find second company with customer list and match. Example: One company sell diet suplements, they customers might be interesitng about all healthy products, video seminars, audiobooks, books, so on. Find who sell those things and connect. Tricki part is to make a deal and get paid but with attorney help You can aquire right for almost passive income commision. Grab yellow pages and make some brain strom with somebody, you can`t imagine how many possibilities out there.

  17. Stefan

There is always an option to buy an existing business for those who do not want to start from the scratch. The ones without a necessary experience can focus on multiple franchise opportunities available.

  18. Cheap Webdesign

I think keeping a positive mental attitude is a must in the current financial situation - don’t panic, just think clearly about where you want to be and what you want to do. Use your current situation to your benefit and learn a new skill - that’s my two cents worth!

  19. Paralegal Job Board

While I generally don’t advise people to do things they hate for a living, it is true that in a terrible employment market, sometimes we just have to make sacrifices. Giving someone else (an employer) what they want instead of going solely for what we may want is certainly one way to overcome the bad market.

  20. modazadoma

Absolutely agree. One of the thing you can do is to become a freelancer. If you know something about computers you can make website or write articles for money.

  21. Jon Brandon

I love you thought process. I have always been the type to take the initiative to teach myself and have recently started my own network consulting company. Things have changed so drastically so quickly that I feel that you have to realign yourself with a skill set that is in demand today.

  22. albuquerque web design

Positive attitude is needed,First we need to understand the consumer preference before lunching any product that will always have success and always have money.Very informative blog and i like your writing style.

  23. cheap venetian blinds

great business often emerge from problems that you face, then turning them into solutions. Brainstorming potential business ideas is often a great method.

  24. free spyware tools

yes i agree, working 80 hrs a week at will, not at someone else’s requirements is the key, most people get confortable with a job and eventually get tired and dont care, which i understand, but when the job market is not strong, these people go back and wish they had worked harder to keep their jobs

  25. Josh

Good points but I think it all just boils down to word of mouth. Sending our resumes and scouring the internet for work will always be inferior to hitting the streets and pubs and talking to as many people as possible. Word of mouth trumps most situations.

I particularly like your suggestion of offering to sell a companies product - it is a win-win for everyone!

  26. Manager Jobs

Great info. I think that was so on point about the people who are out of work are the people that sell stuff that others don’t need.

  27. medical transcription jobs

While this is certainly a nice gesture, it unfortunately will not help to many people. In times like this an unemployed person needs a job with a bit of security, something that offers a paycheck each and every week or month, whichever it may be.

  28. Properties in Gurgaon

I have been using Javelin’s lead program and of every 10 leads, I get two hot ones with prospects ready to meet. I had my doubts about using the system as I’m not that Internet savvy. My first sale was a $100,000 sale and its quite exciting to have something that works.
    .

  29. VIP Credit Cards

This is the exact conclusion I came too! I hate the idea of working for someone else now. I would rather build my own business!

  30. dog insurance review

I like it. I’m starting to take this attitude with marketing in general. It wasn’t until I started my own carpet cleaning business did I find that this is so true.

  31. Sean @ Free Money

Completely agree with you. Have find the right niche, that will do 50% of the job for us. Thanks for sharing this post with us. A very useful post.

  32. IsraelFinancialExpert

You need to do the thing you have passion for , like blogging:)

  33. propane hose adaptor

My advice to unemployed is that know your powers and start your own business to succeed in life.

  34. David

I would advice to start thinking about your own business. It`s the best time for startups righ now

  35. Pet SUV products

My advice to those looking for jobs is to see what you’re good at and then start creating ways to make money at it! I am convinced that everyone can do something.

  36. Brian

Finding out what the things that people will pay you to do is the key. There are certain things that everybody hates doing and will pay others to them, from moving the lawn, to pick up dog poop. There are tons of things people hate to do.

  37. Kelly Ripa

Thank you, I too am unemployed and this is great advice that you are giving. I will start using this advice and giving the same advice to people to I know. Thanks again!!

  38. Binoculars

I have been unemployed for a while now and like your advice about finding what people need and then getting a job, but, what happens if you find an employers who needs you, but you don’t have the experience he requires, but you do have the knowledge. That is a definite bummer for me every time I try to think outside the box to find a job, plus if I see something that interests me, if I need to get educated via taking courses, I’m not in a position to shell out money for something that may not even work out for me. I think I’m in a catch 22 situation - damned if I do and damned if I don’t do anything!!!

  39. tempo dulu

nice sentiments, but when there are more people looking for jobs than there are jobs, then some people will be unemployed regardless.

  40. Full Size

I agree with you to an extent. I just can’t recommend doing something that you hate because it really isn’t worth it in the long run. Life is too short to waste it with a job you can’t stand.

  41. Doug

I stopped working for the “man” some time ago. Is it easy being self employed? Not by a long shot. Just as you say you still have to sell or offer people what they want and not what you you want. At least though I am not at the whim of one person or one business as when I was employed.

  42. Cheaper Auto Insurance

You must be creative and be open to try new things. Im working on starting my own business.

  43. Boynton Beach

“I like the idea of asking rich people what they would pay money for. I think that would be a great way of coming up with some interesting business ideas.”

Rich people don’t like to pay, that’s why they are rich I guess.

  44. Frank Auer

I think you make an excellent point about continuing to educate yourself. I started to get my MBA before the economy went South. About two years in (I was in the parttime program) classes got flooded with new students as the economy collapsed. However, since I was a life long learner I was ahead of the curve. Now I have graduated and found more work, while the people who waited are still in school. My advice would be to continue your education when you don’t need to, if you wait until you need to, then its too late.

  45. Neil Young

Now to find a satisfactory job of their own is really hard! Do not know what should or should not continue with their studies?

  46. My Lab Created Diamond

I definitely agree with this post. I think more and more people are starting to break away from the traditional notions about having a career for life and starting to be more flexible in the way they earn a living.

  47. vendi

i agree its very difficult to get job
but you can become freelancer with your talent or ability

  48. Business VoIP Providers

As long as you know what people are looking for, there is nearly endless possibilities in making money.

  49. bingo

I agree with most above: it’s about finding your confidence, your niche and achieving something small each day.

  50. Content Writing

It is true that self-learning is the fad nowadays and it offers lots of opportunities too. You don’t even have to submit CV and be employed by somebody as you can start your business online in your own room.

  51. mark

Actually now with the recession it is always nice to see articles helping people surviving from the unemployment. But what about freelancing ? Maybe this is the wait out to unemployment.

  52. Nathan

This is a great concept you’ve presented here. People need to stop thinking “I need a job” and start thinking about how valuable their skills and assets are to other people. As an internet marketer, just the idea of a “9 to 5″ irks me. Now’s the time to do what you’re good at, do what you love, and make things happen for yourself.

  53. Scott Hubbard

I agree with your article. It may very well be a blessing to be laid off from a job that you don’t like. Many must make the decision - to pursue another job or to get into an internet home based business.

The income potential is so much greater in a home business than a job. I feel that it is very important that you get into a business with products or services that you have an interest in and a passion for. Like you say, even if you don’t know that much about the topic, the internet allows you to learn very quickly all you need to know and learn it quickly. Thanks for the article.

  54. Jessica

I completely agree. I learned early on in job hunting that you cant look for a specific job. Look at everything available in your area. Its a lot of work, but you may be able to find something you will enjoy more and maybe even be paid more doing.

  55. Professional Wiriting Services

Why do things you hate for a living? Although good opportunities might be on stock for things that you don’t really like to do, it’s self-motivation and happiness that drive individual to do better. If one is happy with what he does, he can stay for that job for life.

  56. Small Business Factoring

I greatly agree with this article. People need to open their minds to all sorts of possibilities, when seeking employment. beggars can’t be choosers!

  57. Mohneesh Kumar Wadhwani

I think, no one stays unemployed, the can work as freelancer anytime they want. There is just a need to think in a right direction… Hope I havn’t hurted any one’s feeling…. :)

  58. Karla Kontaktbörse

david is absolutely right, if you wanna start a own business, do it now!

  59. rupesh

i think to start own business , i get much help from you , thank YOU

  60. Reese

A lot of jobs are boring, that I can say. Unless your a high rank executive, reporting for work every single day is really not fun. But then again, some people are cut out for it.

  61. West vancouver homes

Exactly, look for what people WANT. We have to adapt in life, and if everyone conforms to you, then you aren’t worth much value to others. Realistically, they are the employer, they have what say in what is hot or not. If you aren’t hot for the market, then get educated, or better present yourself to the market. While it is common sense, it is often overlooked because we are too stubborn to make the changes in our lives to succeed.

  62. Laura Ontvangst

Do you really think a company is going to hire somebody to do their accounting if the person has little to none information about it? If the employee didn’t study accounting and learned about it on the internet what sane employer is going to hire him?

  63. Whittier Homes

Interesting information on Medicaid qualified annuities; I have annuities just not that familiar with this use. Seems to be a very viable way to protect your asset and get the care one needs. I have to looking into this with my financial advisor.

  64. Business VoIP Solutions

I agree with David, starting up your own business now is the way to go! I’ve made a lot of money from a startup business. It is tough work though! Good luck to everyone!

  65. benslade

Yes i fully agree with what u have written. Its the only customer or people demand to increase our business. So we have to be curious and know what the people want ,what they want to buy.

  66. carpet cleaners bellevue

I like your no-nonsense writing style. Sometimes what we need to hear isn’t what we want to hear.

  67. Matt

Some great advice on here but some people are a slave to their comfort blanket or the guaranteed wage that hiots their account on the 25th of every month. Lets get the US and the UK up and running again spreading the word of good solid advice like this.

  68. Big City News

It was said so often and still not too many people actually do it:
Times like these where jobs are cut and it seems rather dull on the job-market are the best times to start businesses.
If more people start their own company, big or small, then they will employ some others soon and the whole “crisis” turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to them :)

  69. essay

what do people want? or what do people need? all answers can be a good business to start. you just need to find your niche

  70. Bulkar Kemail

Great idea well put. But the bulk of people just want to get back to their safe rut. They would rather type their resume and email it to possible employers. It is so much safer than trying something new!

  71. Josh Flirten

“Exactly, look for what people WANT. We have to adapt in life, and if everyone conforms to you, then you aren’t worth much value to others. Realistically, they are the employer, they have what say in what is hot or not. If you aren’t hot for the market, then get educated, or better present yourself to the market. While it is common sense, it is often overlooked because we are too stubborn to make the changes in our lives to succeed.”

Good way of putting it. I think a lot of people are afraid of trying to learn new things. Specially when they have just lost their long-time job and have to find something new.

  72. affiliatetopsecret

Another way is ask yourself what you want ? it’s simple as that fellas

  73. ALLAN Erxleben

Finding a job is like a finding yourself.People should think of what job they want to do and shape that wish in your education. For example, i am economyst, i never like that job but i like computers and web design, so i bought 2 books, learn how to use software for web designing. People should have a motivation for any kind of job, that is the best recipe for sucsess.

  74. Rich

To quote The Kinks, Give The People What They Want. Even in this economy, there’s still money changing hands, and indeed new opportunities have arisen because of the poor economic climate. Great reminder, thanks for this.

  75. Kennenlernen

You brought up some great points here. I think that to really get yourself out of a rut you need to be creative. You have to come up with new ways at looking at things that people are looking for that you could provide for them.

Learning is definitely the number one way to make money. I’m so happy that I try and constantly push myself into new areas that I know nothing about to try and push my limits of what I know.

  76. Island Pag - Novalja Party holiday.

The point several ways to find out what the people want is a must read for the people who are looking for a job…. they must think of it when they see a Job ad in the newspaper….

  77. Josh

realy, you can freelance if you hate office work

  78. internet fax

I guess that makes sense. If you have a hard time finding a job it’s because you’re offering a service that nobody needs. I can understand that. What choice have you really got then but to try your hand at something else? Sometimes change is good though and it gets you out of a rut.

  79. Free Ebooks

In a time like this, it’s never been easier to get a job online. Learn people learn by yourself, you can’t expect a job coming directly to you! You gotta market yourself and you gotta be good at something. Like the author said, this is the internet age and everybody can do it now.

  80. Nick

It is becoming like working for an intelligence - finding out where the job is. Today, unfortunately, no loyalty towards employees despite all the big words about “we value our employees etc etc”. What’s funny, is that my former company’s website was blatantly telling how great work environment it was, with 2 rounds of layoffs in 6 months

  81. fazzy@ djs blackburn

If you cant find work then you should just create work its easier said than done though.

  82. ClueHut

The environment of work has changed so much. I was speaking with a gentleman aged in his 80’s he worked for Kodak for over 40 years, great retirement benefits. He told me the great loyalty companies had to their employees before the 1990’s. You speak to anyone that is retired now most spent a great part of their lives working for the same company, people were valued and honored for their loyalty to the company. What happened was greed had taken over, its about the bottom line, more money for the shareholders/investors etc people are good only as long as the company is turning a great profit. The other thing that has changed is if you worked hard you could get a head and become very successful, nowadays it is not so much how talented or how hard you work, it’s who you know and how much money you have. Haven’t you noticed that all those that are achieving come from money or have the connections more than ever before as how can anyone even get ahead when the cost to get by in some cases takes two jobs or more? What a paycheck use to buy it does not buy anymore. You could pay off your house in a few years now we are looking at 40 year mortgages. A car you paid cash for remember the affordable Model T Ford, well today people take 4-5 years to pay off a car. I hope that the site I have built can change this and we are so far changing people’s lives everyday. I believe the only way we are going to overcome this problem is in the coming of together and working together as a team where two minds are greater than one. In this world it is practically impossible for a person from humble beginnings to make it! Therefore, we need to connect with others to make what we have become possible and shine so bright others will take notice. But sadly it seems society has forgotten the power in our connections with each other, and this is where struggle brings us back to what is important.

  83. RedTech Carpet Cleaners

I worked within the corporate world for ten years. Loved the travel and meeting new people. Absolutely hated being away from my young family, playing politics and bearing witness to the glacial rate of change endemic in large corporations - not as bad as public sector mind you.

Since January this year I have completely retrained and have started up my own business in the carpet cleaning sector - as some one once said “where there’s muck there’s brass” . I now drive around in my truck every day meeting new people (which I love) and basically solve their problems, make them happy and they pay me for that privilege.

  84. Bob @ Gluten Free Foods

That’s an excellent article and it applies to say many areas in life. There are tons of companies, consultants, sales people… out there trying to sell something no one really wants. The golden rule is always: Find out what people desperately want and then sell it to them - and these are actually the easiest sales, because there is no need for hard selling.

  85. Mark @ Bridal Shower Registry

Sometimes stepping out of our comfort zones is the best thing for us. I’ve been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and am finding it exciting to try something new. Working the same old 9-5 everyday is boring, but it is also safe. It helps when someone finds themself unemployed and is forced to try something new.

  86. Lord @ Online Degree

The idea of reading newspaper is great i was using it to figure out what kind of trend in industry is going on, it helps you to analysis the market is right way.

  87. easy ways lose weight

There are SO many potential jobs out there and so many that haven’t even been thought up yet that it’s impossible not to find something ELSE that you can do!

  88. Aisle 19

Good article. If anyone wants another great tip for a place to make money there is the internet. Like the article says, you can learn almost anything online from simple YouTube or Google searches. Learn how to program, make websites, market websites, etc.

I get annoyed by people who are complaining about the bad economy and how they can’t get a job. This article is dead straight. The rules of money-making have changed! It’s time to get off your duff and start your own business! And on the internet, you can even get started for free!!

    Thanks for the refreshing article.

  89. Dell Laptop Charger

I think looking through local job search web sites is a great way to find out what the market is looking like. The internet listings might be more skewed towards tech jobs, so it would be a good idea to check the newspaper too.
Love the idea of asking rich people what they want. So simple, but so smart!
